Research Notes on Blood Pressure and Saunas

Contrary to popular belief, a short stint in a sauna or steam room does not raise blood pressure.1 In fact, it may actually help to lower it! The heated air inside the sauna causes the blood vessels to relax, thereby allowing blood to flow more freely through the heart with less pressure.1 Allowing the body to naturally return to a normal temperature is crucial. Taking a cool shower or swimming in cooler water will cause the blood vessels to constrict and blood pressure will rise quickly.2

Fast Facts:

  • It is important for anyone suffering from a blood pressure disorder to speak with their physician regarding the use of saunas before taking one.1
  • Stay no more than 15-20 minutes inside the sauna.2
  • Because of an already lowered blood pressure, those with hypotension should avoid saunas and hot tubs.3
