Research Notes on Blood Pressure and Insomnia
Researchers now believe there is a link between high blood pressure and insomnia. Chronic insomnia is a risk factor that may lead to higher blood pressure.1 People who get less than five hours of sleep a night are five times more likely to develop hypertension.2 Researchers have found that people who suffer from insomnia have a higher amount of the hormone cortisol in their system, which can raise blood pressure. The use of medication and life style changes can help you combat your insomnia.
Fast Facts:
- More than six hours of sleep a night is considered normal.
- Lack of sleep is also linked to obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.2
- Insomnnia can also lead to depression, anxiety, and even in some cases suicide.3
