Research Notes on Blood Glucose Monitoring

Blood glucose monitoring is a way of testing the concentration of glucose in the blood (glycemia).1 This monitoring is mostly used in patients with diabetes.1 The test is performed by pricking the finger (or arm) and placing the blood on a chemically active disposable strip.1 The amount of blood glucose monitoring depends on which type of diabetes you have and if you use insulin.1 People with Type 2 diabetes test at least once per day.1 Type 1 diabetes and many Type 2s (who use insulin) test 3-10 times a day.1

Fast Facts:

  • Chemical test strips are used in blood glucose monitoring for people not using insulin.1
  • A blood glucose meter is an electronic device for measuring the blood glucose level.1
  • A continuous blood glucose monitor (CGM) determines blood glucose levels on a continuous basis (every few minutes).1
  • New technologies to monitor blood glucose levels are near IR detection, ultrasound and dielectric spectroscopy.1
