Research Notes on Blood Clot Signs and Symptoms
Blood clot signs and symptoms depend on where the blood clot is located in the body. A blood clot in an artery of an arm or leg may cause sudden pain, swelling, and a slight blue coloration. If it is in a vein, it may cause swelling and tenderness. Vision problems, weakness, seizure, or speech impairment can occur if the blood clot is located in the brain. A blood clot located in the lung can cause a stabbing chest pain, rapid heart rate, blood-tinged coughing, shortness of breath, and low-grade fever. A blood clot in the abdomen can cause chronic abdominal pain, vomiting, and/or diarrhea. A blood clot located in the heart can cause chest pain which can lead to a heart attack.1
