Research Notes on Blepharoplasty
Blepharoplasty is eyelid surgery for functional or cosmetic purposes. This procedure repairs droopy eyelids by removing excess skin, muscle and fat.1 The upper or lower eyelid can be reshaped by the removal or repositioning of excess tissue as well as by reinforcement of surrounding muscles and tendons.2 Sagging skin around the eyes not only makes a person look older, it can also impair vision.1
Fast Facts:
- Blepharoplasty does not alter dark circles, fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, or sagging eyebrows.3
- A plastic surgeon may recommend a browlift, facelift, or skin resurfacing (dermabrasion or chemical peel) at the same time as blepharoplasty.3
- Each year approximately 100,000 Americans have a blepharoplasty procedure.4
