Research Notes on Bladder
The bladder is a sac-like structure in the pelvis that holds urine which has been excreted from the kidneys before it is passed out of the body via the urethra.1 In adults, the bladder is capable of holding up to a pint of urine.2 If the bladder capacity reaches its full limit, the ejection of urine is involuntary; however, the bladder can rupture.3
Fast Facts:
- Bladder cancer is three times more common in men than in women.4
- Emptying the bladder regularly is important to prevent damage to the bladder and kidneys.5
- When empty, the bladder is about the size of a tennis ball.6
