Research Notes on Birth Defects and Fertility Treatment

A new study has found that fertility treatments raise the risk of birth defects. Every pregnancy holds a 3% risk of birth defects, but with a fertility treatment, like in vitro fertilization, the risk is raised to 6-12%.1 This study reveals that pregnancies conceived with the the aid of fertility treatments increase the likelihood of children born with septal heart defects, cleft lips and palates, and gastrointestinal defects.2

Fast Facts:

  • Data from 14,095 naturally conceived births and 281 assisted reproductive technology (ART) births was analyzed.3
  • ART has been in use in the U.S. since 1981 and by 2005, more than 134,000 ART procedures had been performed.3
  • The study appears in the journal Human Reproduction.
