Research Notes on Birth Control and Ovulation
A birth control pill is taken to prevent ovulation. A woman cannot get pregnant if she doesn't ovulate because there is no egg to be fertilized. Other pills try to thicken the mucus around the cervix, making it difficult for the sperm to enter the uterus and reach any egg(s) that may have been discharged. Birth control pills also contain synthetic hormones (estrogen and progesterone), that can affect the lining of the uterus, preventing the attachment of the egg to the wall of the uterus. The use of birth control pill is one of the many contraceptive methods in family planning.
