Women with thyroid disease such as hypothyroidism take thyroid hormone supplements to avoid getting hormonal imbalance. If they start taking birth control pills, dosage of the thyroid hormone should be increased. This is to compensate for the higher levels of estrogen in pills which may neutralize the efficiency of the thyroid hormone.
