Birth Control Pills and GERD

Research Notes on Birth Control Pills and GERD

Some birth control pills use a hormone called progesterone. Progesterone relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter, and when the sphincter is relaxed, it cannot close off the esophagus so stomach acid is released. This can either cause GERD, or add to a pre-existing condition.
