Birth Control Pills and Acne

Acne is caused by overproduction of oil by the sebaceous glands caused by the release of the hormone androgen. Birth control pills contain the hormone estrogen which neutralizes the effects of androgen. Ortho tri-cyclen is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for treating and preventing acne.
