Research Notes on Birth Control Pill Comparison

There are a number of birth control pills on the market, and proper comparison of the types of pills available can help in choosing a contraceptive that is right for you. In general, pills differ in the amount of synthetic estrogen and progestin contained in each. The two most common types of pills are combination pills and progestin-only pills.1 Combination pills contain both estrogen and progestin, and work by thickening the cervical mucus and therefore preventing sperm from reaching the eggs.2 Progestin-only pills work the same way, but do not contain synthetic estrogen, and are generally used when health or circumstances (such as nursing a child) prevent the use of extra estrogen.1

Fast Facts:

  • Combination pills may be categorized as monophasic, biphasic, or triphasic, as determined by their effect on hormonal levels.2
  • All combination pills contain estrogen.2
  • The amount of progestin in pills is associated with their androgenic effect.3
  • Androgenic effects are side effects caused by the progestin's interaction with testosterone levels. These effects may include acne and hair growth.3
