Research Notes on Birth Asphyxias
Birth asphyxia occurs when a baby does not have adequate oxygenation just before, during or after birth. Decreased oxygen levels may cause the baby to have a low heart rate, low blood pressure and decreased blood flow from the heart. This may inhibit blood flow to vital organs and tissues, resulting in improper cell function and damage.1
Fast Facts:
- Organs typically affected by low oxygen levels include the brain, heart and blood vessels, gastrointestinal tract, lungs and kidneys.1
- Birth asphyxia may also be called intrauterine hypoxia, hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy and perinatal asphyxia.2
- In severe birth asphyxia, the mortality rate has been reported to be 50-75%. The majority of deaths occur in the first month, due to multiple organ failure or termination of care.3
