Research Notes on Bird Flu Symptoms


Bird flu (avian influenza) symptoms will normally depend on which virus caused the infection. The most common symptoms associated with the bird flu include coughing, fever, muscle aches, and sore throat. More serious symptoms which could be life treating include pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome.1

  • Since 1997, there have been over 100 reported cases of the bird flu in humans.2
  • Bird flu can be transmitted by direct contact with infected poultry such as chickens, ducks, and turkeys.2
  • Currently there is only one flu vaccine which treats the strain of H5N1 virus.3
