Research Notes on Bipolar Symptoms in Women
Bipolar disorder is a pattern of extreme episodes of emotional highs followed by emotional lows.1 While men and women are equally like to have a bipolar disorder, this disorder manifests itself differently in each sex.2 Women are more likely to develop bipolar II. Bipolar II symptoms will rarely include mania, but will more often involve mild episodes of hypomania followed by depression.3
Fast Facts:
- Women with a bipolar disorder are also more likely to experience rapid cycling, meaning the occurrence of four or more bipolar episodes per year.3
- Childbirth and menopause can accelerate depressive episodes in women who have a bipolar disorder.4
- Women with a bipolar disorder who become pregnant are more likely to experience severe postpartum depression.4
- Mood stabilizing agents can be used to manage hypomanic episodes, and antidepressants to manage depression, but an absolute cure for bipolar disorder is unknown.2
