Research Notes on Bipolar Symptoms in Children
Differentiating children with symptoms of mania from those with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is challenging for health care professionals.1 Irritability, hyperactivity, and distractibility are common symptoms in children and adolescents with bipolar disorder.1 In addition, feelings of elation, grandiose behaviors, flight of ideas, as well as a decreased need for sleep can be present.1
Fast Facts:
- Risk-taking behavior such as substance use and sexual activity can occur.2
- Physical complaints, withdrawal from activities, and feeling of worthlessness are depressive symptoms.2
- If a child struggles with any combination of symptoms for two weeks or more, a children's mental health professional should be consulted.2
- If you feel your child may have symptoms of bipolar disorder, you can take an OrganizedWisdom quiz on bipolar disorder to help shed light on whether or not they may have this condition.
