Research Notes on Bipolar Medications for Depression
Medications such as buproprion, SSRIs, and venlafaxine can be prescribed to treat depression in bipolar individuals.1 Most often, antidepressants are prescribed in conjunction with other bipolar medications or psychotherapy due to the increased risk of rapid cycling bipolar disorder associated with drug therapy alone.2 Although antidepressants can ease the symptoms of depression, they are not a cure for bipolar disorder.1
Fast Facts:
- Prepare to be monitored closely while taking antidepressants due to an increased risk of suicidal thoughts in children and adolescents.2
- Other potential drugs to treat bipolar depression include mirtazapine, nefazodone, amitriptyline, and tranylcypromine.1
- Bipolar disorder is characterized by both manic and depressive phases.
