Research Notes on Bipolar Medications
Various types of medications are used to treat bipolar disorder, such as anticonvulsants, antipsychotics, and antidepressants.1 While some medications treat manic symptoms, others are more effective during depressive phases. There are also medications intended for maintenance treatment when a person is not experiencing any symptoms at all.1 Patients and their families can work with physicians to find the combination of medications that most effectively treats their bipolar symptoms with the fewest side effects.1
Fast Facts:
- Amitriptyline, bupropion, doxepin, imipramine, paroxetine, protriptyline, and trazodone are some of the commonly prescribed bipolar medications used to treat depressive symptoms.2
- Clozapine, haloperidol, olanzapine, prochlorperazine, risperidone, thiothixene and sulpiride are commonly used treatments for the manic phase.2
- Symbyax is a medication that contains both an antidepressant (fluoxetine) and an antipsychotic (olanzapine) that is commonly used to treat bipolar disorder.1
- You can learn about other treatment options for bipolar disorder direct from psychiatrists!
