Research Notes on Bipolar Medication Common Side Effects

The treatment of bipolar disorder includes a number of classes of drugs such as mood stabilizers, anticonvulsants, and antidepressants.1 As with most medications, they can have some bothersome side effects. Mood stabilization medication can cause harm to a developing fetus, therefore, it should not be used by pregnant women or those who wish to become pregnant unless the benefit clearly outweighs the potential risks.1 Antidepressants can increase the risk of rapid cycling and may actually trigger manic episodes.2 Antipsychotics often carry a risk of triggering diabetes or hyperglycemia, weight gain, sexual dysfunction, constipation, or blurred vision.2 If you are concerned that weight gain is due to your medications, this quick quiz may help.

Fast Facts

  • If your medication side effects are very bothersome, discuss the possibility of changing medications with your physician.3
  • Side effects may also be decreased by taking lower dosages of your medication more often, but always discuss any changes to your treatment plan with your physician before implementing them.3
  • Many side effects such as nausea and diarrhea can be relieved by changing the time you take your medicine. Consider taking your drugs with or after meals.3
