Research Notes on Bipolar II vs. ADD
ADD and bipolar II share similar symptoms that may make the actual disorder difficult to discern. ADD is characterized by inattentiveness and hyperactivity. Bipolar II, on the other hand, is characterized by prolonged feelings of sadness followed by periods of happiness, both without any perceivable cause.
Fast Facts:
- While someone with ADD may experience sadness, a person with bipolar II will experience depression for weeks on end without apparent reason.1
- Someone with bipolar II may appear inattentive, because an episode of depression causes them to not care about the task at hand.1
- Anger in children with ADD will usually last no more than 30 minutes, while a child with a bipolar disorder can become angry for hours on end and seem to lose touch with reality.2
- The diagnosis of bipolar II or ADD should be made by a medical professional specializing in mental or behavioral disorders.2
