Research Notes on Bipolar II Symptoms

Bipolar II disorder is a mild form of a bipolar disorder, involving episodes of depression that alternate with hypomania, as opposed to mania.1 Hypomania (which means below mania) is defined as having a persistent elevated or irritable mood, but without the psychosis, or loss of touch with reality, found in pure mania. Doctors can diagnose bipolar II after they can identify at least one major episode of depression, one hypomanic episode, a lack of any manic episodes, and cannot determine any other cause for these conditions.2

Fast Facts:

  • People with bipolar II do not have any psychotic features such as delusions and hallucinations.2
  • Symptoms of a major episode of depression include: insomnia, weight loss, daily lack of energy, and constant feelings of worthlessness.3
  • Symptoms of a hypomanic episode include: lack of need for sleep, increased energy, being more talkative than usual, shortened attention span, and impulsive behavior.3
  • You can take an OrganizedWisdom quiz on bipolar disorder to help shed light on whether or not you may have this condition.
