Research Notes on Bipolar I
Bipolar I, a form of bipolar disorder, is sometimes diagnosed if you have had at least one major depression episode followed by a manic state.1 Symptoms include manic phases during which you may feel increased energy or hyperactivity, decreased need for sleep, fleeting thoughts, and possibly excessive spending and hypersexuality.2 Depression will typically begin within days or weeks after a manic episode, causing your energy level to drop and feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or even suicidal thoughts may occur.2 Medications are available to treat bipolar I, but it is a long-term illness which must be managed throughout life.3 If you feel you are suffering from bipolar I, you are not alone. It is estimated that more than six million American adults have bipolar disorder.2
Fast Facts:
- Bipolar disorder does appear to run in families, but scientists are unable to link the illness with any one gene mutation.3
- Thyroid disorders are common in those with bipolar disorder.3
- Although many physicians can prescribed various bipolar medications, it is strongly recommended that you seek the help of a trained psychiatrist so that both your mental and physical health needs can be met.3
