Research Notes on Bipolar Genetics
Bipolar disorder is thought to be genetic, involving several gene variants. In a recent study, the gene Ankyrin 3 (ANK3) showed the strongest variation associated with bipolar disorder. Researchers also found that the balance of sodium and calcium in the brain cells is possibly an influence in bipolar disorder.1
Fast Facts:
- If one identical twin has bipolar disorder, the other has up to an 80% chance of developing it also.2
- There is about a 30% risk of a child developing bipolar disorder if both parents have the disorder.3
- The risk of a child developing bipolar if one parent has the disorder is about 5%.3
