Research Notes on Bipolar Disorder in Women
While bipolar disorder is equally common in both men and women, women are more likely to develop bipolar II.1 Women tend to develop milder episodes of mania with more frequent episodes of depression, a trend that physicians call "rapid cycling."2 Women who are diagnosed with bipolar are also more likely to develop additional illnesses, such as thyroid disease, alcoholism, medication-induced obesity, and migraine headaches.3 Mood stabilizing drugs used in the treatment of bipolar disorder have been linked to an increased risk of developing polycystic ovarian disease which can be a contributing factor to infertility.1
Fast Facts:
- It is not uncommon for a woman to experience four or more bipolar episodes per year.1
- Menstrual cycle changes can sometimes cause symptoms to worsen.4
- The risk of a bipolar episode recurring is as high as 67-82% within 3-6 months after childbirth.4
- Carbamazepine, a medication used to treat bipolar disorder, can reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills leaving women at risk for an unplanned pregnancy.4
