Research Notes on Bipolar Disorder and Substance Abuse
Bipolar disorder and substance abuse often accompany one another. It is not clear which condition is the cause of the other. Evidence suggests that bipolar patients may turn to drugs and alcohol in an effort to self-medicate during manic or depressive episodes. It is estimated that at least one half of all bipolar patients have a substance abuse problem.1 Since substance abuse increases the severity of bipolar disorder, both disorders should be treated simultaneously to better control the cycles of bipolar.2
Fast Facts:
- About 30% of cocaine addicts meet the criteria for bipolar disorder.1
- Substance abuse greatly accelerates the cycling of bipolar disorder.2
- Substance abuse reduces the effectiveness of bipolar medications.3
