Research Notes on Bipolar Disorder and Pain Medications
During the emotional lows, or depression episodes, of bipolar disorder the depression may intensify pain. In such a case, antidepressants can serve as pain medications, as relief of depression allows for pain relief.1 Generally, a person with a bipolar disorder who is experiencing pain, has both the disorder and the pain treated simultaneously.
Fast Facts:
- Pain medications given along with antidepressants include standard pain medication such as Tylenol or ibuprofen.2
- People with depression are three times more likely to develop chronic pain.2
- Exercise may also help to relieve pain and depression.2
- Psychotherapy can help to understand the relationship between pain and depression.2
