Research Notes on Bipolar Disorder and Kundalini
Some yoga practitioners believe that kundalini is a kind of spiritual energy within the body that can be awakened through yoga. The symptoms of kundalini may be mistaken as bipolar disorder, and vice versa.1 Some symptoms of kundalini include tremendous bliss, difficulty concentrating, hearing sounds, and rapid mood changes, among others.2
Fast Facts:
- A person who believes they have experienced kundalini should be assessed to confirm that kundalini has indeed occurred.1
- Many people say that the kundalini experience is indescribable.3
- Kundalini experiences are not well understood in the health care field.2
- If you happen to have a history of bipolar disorder or other mental illness, and you're not sure if you're experiencing a manic episode or something else brought on by your yoga practice, consult your doctor or mental health professional.
