Research Notes on Bipolar Disorder and Exercise
A common side effect of bipolar medications is weight gain.1 Because studies have shown that exercise is an effective treatment for depression, many physicians feel that it also benefits their bipolar disorder patients.2 Aerobic exercise may be as effective as antidepressants, but if you are depressed and don't feel up to an aerobics class, just taking a brisk walk daily can help improve your symptoms and help you lose weight.1 Exercise can help to raise energy levels, restore regular sleeping and eating patterns, release endorphins, and increase serotonin levels--all of which are important for bipolar patients.1
Fast Facts:
- Studies show that up to 90% of depressed patients report feeling some relief from their symptoms after exercise.3
- One study shows that exercise may increase brain cells.4
- Always consult your physician before starting an exercise routine.5
- Treat yourself to a massage after completing exercise on a routine basis.5
