Research Notes on Bipolar Disorder and Depression
Both bipolar disorder and depression, or major depressive disorder, have similar characteristics. Both illnesses are accompanied by periods of depression. Bipolar disorder, or manic depression, is characterized by extreme episodes of mania and depression which cause disabling instability.1 Depression is a condition in which a person may feel sad, angry, or frustrated for long periods of time.2
Fast Facts:
- Some kinds of bipolar disorder are commonly misdiagnosed as depression. Simple questionnaires such as Am I Bipolar? can help determine which condition you may have.3
- A study funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) has found that bipolar disorder costs twice as much in lost work related productivity as major depressive disorder.4
- Your psychiatrist should be seen to ensure proper diagnosis and timely, efficient and safe management of your condition.3
