Research Notes on Bipolar Disorder and Cancer Treatment
Studies have shown that Tamoxifen, a drug originally created to treat breast cancer may also be an effective treatment for bipolar disorder.1 The drug targets a protein in the brain that becomes more active during the manic phase. In a study, more than sixty percent of people who were given this drug showed reduced bipolar symptoms within three weeks.2
Fast Facts:
- This drug raises the risk for endometrial cancer.2
- Tamoxifen is described as a protein kinase C (PKC) inhibitor.3
- Further research still needs to be completed.3
