Research Notes on Autism and Manic Depression
Some studies suggest that autism is linked to a family history of depression-related illness.1 Autism occurs more frequently in families where manic depressive illness (bipolar disorder) is prevalent.1 These studies hypothesize that manic depression in early infancy causes the clinical features associated with autism in some children.1
Fast Facts:
- Symptoms may include sadness, rigidity, mood swings, tantrums, and excessive fearfulness.2
- Low levels of serotonin on the left side of the brain may be present.2
- Some recommend treating autistic children with Prozac and other SSRIs to compensate for the serotonin deficit.2
