Research Notes on Bipolar Disorder and Addiction
Bipolar disorder and addiction are often linked together. As many as 60% of people with bipolar disorder will have some type of addiction. Some will turn to depressants such as alcohol or pain medications to manage mania; others will turn to stimulants such as cocaine and methamphetamines to deal with depression.1
Fast Facts:
- Those with rapid cycling seem to have the highest rate of substance abuse.2
- Women tend to have a very high rate of alcoholism along with bipolar disorder.3
- Those with a substance abuse problem and bipolar disorder are more prone to suicide attempts.4
- Drug abuse can often be what drives people with bipolar disorder to get help for their condition, according to psychiatrists.
