Research Notes on Bipolar Disorder Types

Individuals with bipolar disorder experience mood swings that range from high mania to low periods of depression. There are two main types of bipolar disorder. People with bipolar 1 have episodes of both depression and mania. In bipolar 2, people suffer from episodes of severe depression with occassional episodes of hypomania. Another type of bipolar disorder is cyclothymic disorder, in which an individual alternates between hypomania and mild depression.1

Fast Facts:

  • Cyclothymic disorder is not as severe as bipolar 1 and 2; however, it persists for longer periods of times with no break in symptoms.1
  • Bipolar 1 is one of the most severe forms of mental illness; it has almost a 15% risk of death by suicide.2
  • In general, people with bipolar 2 do not experience mania, mixed episodes, or psychosis.2
