Bipolar disorder statistics indicate that this condition, also known as manic depression, affects about 2.6% of the U.S. population age 18 and older or 5.7 million adult Americans.1 The average age of onset of bipolar disorder is 25. Two thirds of all those with bipolar disorder have a relative with the illness, indicating a genetic link.1

- Bipolar disorder affects men and women equally.2
- When one parent has bipolar disorder their children are 15-30% more likely to develop the disorder, when both parents suffer from the disorder children are 50-75% more likely to develop bipolar disorder.3
- Research has shown women with bipolar disorder are more likely to have more depressive episodes and mixed episodes than men.1
