Research Notes on Weight Gain and Bipolar Disorder Medications
Many people who take prescription medication for the treatment of bipolar disorder suffer one common side effect: weight gain. Both selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and mood stabilizers can be blamed for causing weight gain. A 20 to 30 pound gain is common with SSRIs.1
Fast Facts:
- Unwanted weight gain should not be a reason to discontinue taking medication.
- Depakote, lithium, and Zyprexa commonly cause weight gain.2
- The anticonvulsant, Topamax, may stimulate weight loss.1
