Research Notes on Bipolar Disorder History

A bipolar disorder is any mood disorder characterized by a pattern of emotional highs (also known as mania) followed by emotional lows (also known as depression). The term mania was first noted in the 2nd century, when the Greek physician Soranus observed that people of his time believed depression and mania were related.1 The original theory of bipolar disorders began to take shape in the 1850s, as French scientists researched the relationship between mania and depression.2 This theory was modernized in 1902 by the German psychiatrist Emil Kraepelin. Because there was no cure for bipolar disorders at the time, Kraepelin was able to conduct and publish a study that observed the natural development of bipolar disorders in patients.1

Fast Facts:

  • 1948, Dr. John Cade from Melbourne, Australia, found lithium carbonate to be a possible treatment for bipolar disorders.1
  • Doctors still don't know much about the cause of bipolar disorders.3
  • Types of bipolar disorders are: bipolar type I, bipolar type II, cyclothymic disorder, and mixed bipolar disorder, and rapid-cycling bipolar disorder.3
