Research Notes on Bipolar Disorder Diagnosis
A bipolar disorder diagnosis is made after the severity, length, and frequency of symptoms are carefully evaluated by a psychiatrist or psychologist. The primary symptom of bipolar disorder is the extreme mood changes in the patient that go from very high (mania) to very low (depression).1 The initial evaluation that is conducted for a bipolar disorder diagnosis is a clinical interview, mental status exam, in-depth questioning about symptoms, and possibly psychological tests.2
Fast Facts:
- The Mood Disorder Questionnaire can help diagnose bipolar disorder.3
- A family history is obtained because bipolar disorder contains a genetic component.1
- Other conditions, such as lupus, HIV, and syphilis, can mimic bipolar disorder.1
