Research Notes on Bipolar Causes

It is not known what causes bipolar disorder. At least 50% of people with bipolar disorder have a parent with some type of mood disorder, with major depressive disorder seen most often.1 Researchers are studying genes in order to find ones that may be involved in causing bipolar disorder. Links between bipolar disorder and schizophrenia are also being studied, with some results pointing to a shared genetic cause.2

Fast Facts:

  • If a fraternal twin has bipolar disorder, there is a 15-25% likelihood that the other twin will also have bipolar.3
  • An identical twin has a 70% chance of having bipolar disorder, if the other twin is diagnosed with the illness.3
  • New mothers with bipolar disorder have a 30% to 50% risk of having an episode during the first month after childbirth. To ensure the safety of both mother and child, it is important for proper monitoring during pregnancy.1
