Bipolar II disorder is one of four types of bipolar disorder that affects millions of Americans.1 It is characterized by at at least one hypomanic episode (mania that does not fully develop into psychotic mania) and one depressive episode.1 While 50% of bipolar II disorder appears to have a familial link (runs in families), the other 50% of the time the cause is never established.2 Treatment options include medications and therapy, but it is a lifelong struggle for most.2

Fast Facts

  • If you suffer from bipolar II, lifestyle changes can be important to manage your symptoms. Consider avoiding stress, caffeine, alcohol and illicit drugs, as well as maintaining proper nutrition, exercising, and maintaining a healthy sleep routine in order to keep your body as healthy and possibly avoid triggering an episode.2
  • Bipolar II may be underdiagnosed because most patients continue to be high-functioning throughout the course of both manic and depressive episodes.3
  • Almost half of those diagnosed with bipolar II are also diagnosed with other mood or substance abuse disorders.1
  • According to psychiatrists, by not getting proper treatment, you risk having worse mood swings—and even becoming suicidal, as well as damaging your relationships with friends and family.
