Biopsy

Research Notes on Biopsy

A biopsy involves removing a small sample of tissue from the body for the purpose of diagnosis. Biopsies are most often performed when doctors suspect cancer, but can be used in diagnosing other conditions as well.

Fast Facts:

  • Two primary types are needle biopsy and open surgical biopsy.
  • Surgical biopsies remove all or part of the suspicious tissue.
  • Needle biopsies include several different methods; which type is used is determined by the location and symptoms.
  • A colposcopy is a biopsy of the cervix following an abnormal pap smear.
  • Tissue removed during a biopsy is usually sent to a lab for analysis, so the patient may need to wait days or weeks to learn the result.
