Research Notes on Biofeedback for Relaxation
Biofeedback helps people relax by teaching them to become aware of, and control, their physiological processes.1 Based on the principles of operant conditioning, biofeedback helps participants develop relaxation techniques through reinforcement of the behavior.1 In biofeedback sessions, patients learn to control their relaxation response and later can apply the skill in everyday life.1
Fast Facts:
- Biofeedback does not offer a variety of stress management techniques, simply the skills to relax.2
- Electronic sensors measure stress and provide participants the opportunity to actually see their relaxation response work.2
- Skin temperature, skin electrical activity, and muscle electrical activity changes provide hard evidence to the participants that their relaxation response can be controlled and used effectively.2
