Research Notes on Biofeedback for Incontinence

Biofeedback is successful in treating urinary incontinence by helping patients learn how to exercise their pelvic floor muscles correctly. During a biofeedback session, sensors are placed on the abdomen and the anus while the patient attempts to exercise the muscles of the pelvic floor. The sensors are connected to a computer screen and will display graphs to show if the correct muscles are being exercised. Many people mistakenly exercise the abdominal muscles rather than those of the pelvic floor. Exercising the abdominal muscles provides no help for urinary incontinence.1

Fast Facts:

  • An average biofeedback session lasts about 30 minutes.1
  • The therapy usually consists of 4 sessions.1
  • Visits are usually scheduled every 2-3 weeks.1
