Research Notes on Biofeedback for Headaches
Biofeedback is an alternative therapy that ideally allows you to use the logic of mind-over-matter to alleviate symptoms of various diseases.1 The use of biofeedback to treat headaches has been closely observed. EMG biofeedback is primarily used in the treatment of tension headaches, while thermal biofeedback can be effective in treating migraine headaches.2 Research has shown that the use of biofeedback and conventional medicine together have a higher effect than using just one or the other alone.3
Fast Facts:
- In EMG biofeedback, electrodes are attached to the temporal muscles, and the subject is taught to reduce muscle tension.2
- In thermal biofeedback, a temperature sensor is placed on the finger, and the subject is taught to increase the temperature.2
- Biofeedback has helped to reduce the frequency of headaches by up to 60%.4
- Biofeedback has also been used in the prevention of headaches.4
- A stress profile may be necessary to gauge how useful biofeedback may be for you.5
