Research Notes on Binge Drinking

Binge drinking has been commonly known as having five or more "standard" drinks in a row for men, and four or more in a row for women. Since "standard" drinks are not the ones people usually consume -- four ounces of wine, for example -- it is often difficult to determine what actually constitutes a binge.

Fast Facts:

  • Researchers are discovering that behavior around drinking is often conditioned more by culture -- expectations set by friends, family, and media -- than by a reaction to the substance itself.
  • Binge drinking is often seen in those suffering a mood or mental disorder, such as the the manic phase of bipolar disorder.1
  • Binge drinking can result in alcohol poisoning.
  • If you think you're drinking too much, simple questionnaires can help you understand how serious your problem might be. Try OrganizedWisdom's alcoholism test.
