Biliary Stricture

Research Notes on Biliary Stricture

Biliary stricture is the narrowing of the bile duct, the tube that moves bile from your liver to your small intestine during digestion. This narrowing is caused by scar tissue that results from bile duct injury, cancer or disease.1 The stricture causes bile, the chemical that aids digestion, to back up and spill into your blood causing jaundice.

Fast Facts:

  • The first sign of a stricture is usually jaundice.2
  • The most common cause is trauma to the bile duct during gallbladder surgery. 3
  • Biliary stricture, if left untreated, can cause life threatening complications.4
  • Biliary stricture can not be prevented, however by preventing gallstones and bile duct or pancreatic cancer, your chances of getting a biliary stricture are greatly reduced.1
  • Treatment involves surgery to restore the flow of bile from the liver to the small intestine.5
