GuideWisdom™

This WisdomCard managed by: Aimee Abellaneda

Biliary Atresia is a rare and serious disease that affects infants. The disease causes injury to or loss of the bile ducts responsible for draining bile from the liver, hence resulting to liver damage. This causes the bile to be trapped inside the liver, causing damage and scarring of the liver (cirrhosis), and eventually leading to liver failure.

Fast Facts:

  • --The overall incidence of biliary atresia in the US is 1 out of every 10,000-20,000 in live births.
  • -- The first sign of biliary atresia is jaundice, which usually occurs 2-3 weeks after birth.
  • -- It is more common among Asian and African-American female infants.
