Research Notes on Bile Duct Obstruction
Bile duct obstruction or biliary obstruction is a condition where the flow of bile is blocked because of the inflammation of ducts, presence of tumor, collection of stones, and trauma in the biliary system. Consequently, when the flow is suppressed, bile accumulates in the liver until it overflows to the bloodstream. The presence of bilirubin in the bloodstream may be manifested by pale stool and yellowish skin aka jaundice. Other signs and symptoms are palpable gallbladder, high fever and chills, abdominal pain, especially in the right upper quadrant, pale feces, and occult blood (blood not visible to the naked eye) in the stool.
Fast Facts:
- Biliary obstruction is also known as cholestasis.
- Causes of bile duct obstruction may be classified into two: intrahepatic cholestasis and extrahepatic cholestasis.
- Gallstones are the most common cause of biliary obstruction. Women are much more likely to develop gallstones than men. Hispanics and Northern Europeans have higher chances of developing gallstones than Asians and Africans.
- Proper visualization of the biliary tree is the best course of action to locate where the obstruction had occurred.
- Maintaining a healthful diet and lifestyle is key to preventing the disorder.
