Research Notes on Bile Acid Binding Resins
Bile acid binding resins are a type of medication used to treat high cholesterol.1 This medication binds to bile, one of the richest sources of cholesterol, and eliminates it from the body through feces. This process results in a lower blood cholesterol level reducing the risk of heart disease.2 Constipation, flatulence, and indigestion are the most common side effects of bile acid binding resins.3 Consult with a health care professional prior to starting this medication.
Fast Facts:
- Bile acid sequestrant and bile acid-binding medicine are alternate names for bile acid binding resins.1
- Colestipol, cholestyramine, and colesevelam are generic forms of bile acid binding resins.1
- These medications are available in tablets or powder form.1
- Other medications prescribed should be administered at least one hour prior or four to six hours after taking bile acid binding resins.4
- Results have shown bile acid resins have lowered low-density lipoprotein (LDL) by approximately ten to twenty percent.4
- Statins, fibrates, and nicotinic acid are other cholesterol reducing medications.5
