Research Notes on Bicornuate Uterus
A bicornuate uterus, also called a 'heart shaped uterus', is a type of uterine malformation which causes two "horns" to form at the upper part of the uterus. It is estimated that 0.1 - 0.5% of all women in the United States have a bicornuate uterus.1 Pregnancies in a bicornuate uterus are generally considered high risk.

- A type of Müllerian defect.2
- There are no known causes for bicornuate uterus, but may be linked to use of DES during pregnancy of the woman's mother.3
- Women have no symptoms and are usually only aware of having a bicornuate uterus after fertility testing or procedures.
