Research Notes on Bibliotherapy
Bibliotherapy involves reading self-help books or other written materials outside of psychotherapy sessions.1 The goal of bibliotherapy is to provide you with a deeper understanding of the problem that prompted the need for treatment.2 Bibliotherapy has proven to be effective in treating such illnesses as mood disorders, eating disorders, and anxiety.2
Fast Facts:
- The term "bibliotherapy" usually refers to its use in the treatment of children.1
- The definition has broadened with time and can also refer to adults reading self-help materials on their own, or even a therapist recommending a movie to watch.1
